I believe that through this study abroad experience I have improved not only my English skills but also my personality. It was also a good opportunity for me to learn about Canadian culture.
When I was in Japan, I rarely thought of doing something on my own. But after coming to Canada, that attitude has changed. The reason for this change is thanks to the friends I made in Canada and the classes I took in Canada. First of all, my friends introduced me to other visitors and TRU students and took me to many places. These were things that I rarely experienced. Also, my friends are very active people who are always trying something. So I was also influenced by my friends to try everything once. For example, if I don’t understand something in my daily life, I ask someone, or if someone calls out to me or laughs at me in downtown or somewhere else, I start talking to them myself. In the past, I would have hesitated to do that. In addition, sometimes I made mistakes, but I still managed to create a strong spirit to try again. All these are thanks to my friends.
Next, regarding the Canadian classes, there were many things that I could not learn in Japan. In Japan, I solve problems by myself or just listen to the teacher and don’t communicate much. However, in Canada, there was a lot of group work, mini-presentations, debates, and other activities to communicate with others. They were very good English practice for me and enabled me to develop the mentality of not being shy about public speaking.
Besides, I also learned and understood a lot of things during my study abroad. They were all discoveries for me. For example, I learned not only the cultural differences, but also the personalities and customs of Canadian people, what they value, and many other things from various people. And this study abroad experience was very fulfilling and fun because I learned something new every day. This experience was something I will never forget.
Finally, thanks everyone for a great time. I am very grateful to Cherie, Melanie and Alexis, my host family, and my classmates for their support during my study abroad. I am also very happy to have been able to come to study abroad with this members.
