Best Western Premier Hotel Fieldwork

Today is my first day of fieldwork. I am very anxious about whether I can do well or not because I heard from my seniors that learning hotel business and hotel words in English is difficult. In the beginning, I had a small talk with our supervisor, but I was very nervous. My first job was not particularly important. On the second day, the three of us had separate jobs. I did housekeeping. The workers taught me all about how to do housekeeping. For example, they taught me about cleaning toilets and bathrooms and making beds. It was a little difficult because it was all new to me and because it was a hotel job, each task had to be done very carefully, but it was very rewarding.

I used Excel to make the data on the number of guests who ate breakfast. There were many things I did not understand and it was difficult for me, but I managed to make it work. Also this week, I was taught how to check in and check out. It was especially interesting to learn how to write down the room types. For example, H means subbed bed and ACC represents a room for the disabled or elderly.

My job this week was housekeeping and paperwork. While doing housekeeping, a worker said that my job was perfect. I was happy because I felt I had accomplished something in this hotel. After that, I had a few more conversations with the workers. It was a lot of fun for me. As for typing, I am not very good at typing in English. So this job was a little difficult for me.

This week I checked the room number and bed type. Once again, I saw clean the rooms, but I thought it must be a good hotel. My next task was to clean up the meeting room. Then I had a chance to talk to the customers. I was happy because I had not talked to many customers in this hotel work. They asked me where the pool was, and I was able to respond.

My work was almost identical to last week’s. So I feel I did better than last week. Also, I think I am a little easier to talk to than before because the person working at the front desk is the same person . That person does most of the work so I don’t have the opportunity to talk to the customers, but I can converse with that worker, so that was a good opportunity for me to practice my English.

It had been a while since I did housekeeping. I had been able to do it perfectly before, but after doing it for the first time in a while, I had a little trouble knowing where to start, but as I did it, I gradually remembered the work process. Also, the person I was working with in housekeeping did not speak English very well, so I had a little trouble keeping the conversation going, but I tried to use simple words and gestures. I cleaned the meeting room. I am getting used to cleaning and am getting good at it.

I ate the breakfast that was left by the guests who were staying at the hotel so that it would not be discarded. I carried the new TVs that had arrived at the hotel and brought as many as needed into one room on each floor of the hotel. I also set up the meeting rooms as usual. The rest of the time I spent talking with the workers about various things.

I learned several cultural and Canadian hotel styles through this fieldwork. First, I did not feel that Canadian hotels have a formal dress code or working attitude like Japanese hotels do. I felt that the attitude while working in Canada was more liberal than in Japan. Secondly, at the hotel where I worked, the housekeeping staff had regular breaks, but the front desk staff and my supervisor, and my boss had no set break time and ate bread during their work. This also surprised me. Third, workers also wore nail polish and piercings as long as they were not too flashy. Fourth, I thought there was a lot of small talk between workers and customers. For example, “How are you? Fifth, there was a lot of joking around, which made me laugh a lot.
Finally, I learned a lot about the culture, customs, and differences between Japan and Canada during this fieldwork. This fieldwork was a very important experience for my future, and it is one of my best memories
